The Muzha district of Taipei is located in northern Taiwan and is known for the distinctive Tieguanyin oolong grown there. While traditionally a well roasted tea, in recent years Chinese Tieguanyin has become closer to a green tea with lower levels of oxidation and roasting. Taiwanese Tieguanyin maintains a more traditional approach in production and delivers a well roasted tea with well-balanced nutty and creamy flavors.

Our Muzha Tieguanyin is oxidized to a level of about 40% before being roasted in intervals for a total of 80 hours over the course of 5 days. This tea has a very smooth texture and creamy body. There are notes of nuts, vanilla, currant, and grass along with the slightly metallic flavor common to this cultivar. It is a great choice if you are looking for a change of pace from some of the greener high mountain teas or are already a Taiwanese Tieguanyin fan.

We had little experience with Taiwanese Tieguanyin before coming to Taiwan, but after spending some time living near the Muzha region in Taipei we ultimately fell in love. It has become a favorite in the mornings as an alternative to coffee, but seems to fit naturally almost anytime.
